Market day, and what to buy on it
The square fills at seven on a Wednesday. Here is what is worth getting up for.
Wednesday, from seven
The stalls go up in the dark and are trading by seven. If you are down before eight you will have the place more or less to yourself, and the bread is still warm.
What is worth carrying home
The cheese stall at the top end is the reason half the town is there. Ask for the hard sheep's cheese wrapped for travelling and it will survive the drive. The flower stall two along sells by the armful rather than the stem, which is how we fill the hall table.
The rest of the week
Saturday is smaller and mostly produce. On a wet Wednesday the whole thing packs up by one, so do not leave it until after lunch.
If you would rather not carry it
Leave anything you buy at reception and we will keep it cold until you check out. People forget, so we write the room number on it.
